A Scientific Research Lab Manager is responsible for the successful execution of the research plans of a specific principal investigator. This involves not only developing and carrying out specific research assigned to the manager but also overseeing all aspects of the daily research lab operations as well as supporting, monitoring and guiding the research efforts of other lab personnel.
The range of duties and systems required for the Research program to succeed in an ever changing scientific environment require the group to be highly versatile, innovative and highly imaginative. The Research Lab Manager is a key position in making sure that the Research group remains on top of ongoing projects and is able to provide training, mentoring and experimental support to ensure this.
Further, they are expected to maintain daily routines of the laboratory, including managing other staff members in the group and associated mouse colonies. This requires a high level of managerial finesse, essential for the efficient functioning of the group and its interactions with others.
The incumbent needs to have a broad scientific knowledge and the capability to use and extend this. They are fully expected to assist in data gathering, consolidation and interpretation. They are also required to design and execute experiments in a skilled way utilizing resources both creatively and efficiently. The incumbent is required to have excellent data organization and computer skills. Their involvement is also expected in the assistance in grant writing and research publications.
What differentiates the Research Lab Associate Manager from the Research Lab Manager is the level of independent thinking and decision making, education, the level of technical expertise and experience supervising, mentoring and training other employees.
In addition, the Scientific Research Lab Manager has knowledge and understanding sufficient to successfully oversee the continuation of the research program during the absence (or preoccupation) of the principal investigator.
Manages the daily operation of the lab and oversight of mouse colonies. Provides training and guidance, and resolves personnel problems. Participates in hiring, performance evaluation, development of staff, and disciplinary decisions.
The incumbent must keep abreast of advances in the field, evaluating alternative methodologies and implementing them to improve the quality of current services or to provide new services.
Assist in writing grants, patents, internal reports, and peer reviewed research papers.
Other duties as assigned.
Proven ability to design and evaluate scientifically controlled and relevant experiments, plus data organizational skills.
Computer skills necessary for analyses, data acquisition, literature searches, data sharing, report presentation etc.
