The Jackson Laboratory, headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine is seeking a Sustainability Program Manager to lead our efforts to minimize the environmental footprint of JAX.

 

Through the implementation of initiatives which reduce the impact that JAX operations, construction and other practices have on the environment with a strong focus on greenhouse gas reductions, energy efficiency related to building operations and maintenance/new construction and renovation, waste reduction, recycling, composting, and water conservation, this position will increase efficiency and effectiveness of The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) operations, improve the health and safety of JAX employees and community members, improve The Laboratory’s image and support all strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Create and lead the Sustainability Implementation Committee (SIC). Host periodic meetings that are informed and productive, such that community stakeholders are motivated to support the development of JAX’s Sustainability Plan. Lead the publication of and implementation of the JAX Sustainability Plan.
  • Maintain close partnerships within Facilities Management to collaborate on common goals and to infuse sustainability principles into physical plant operations and capital projects.
  • Working directly with JAX project managers, JAX building engineers, service providers and other resources to implement the sustainability program and initiatives. Work with JAX project managers on green building certifications and standards on renovation and new construction projects (e.g. LEED, Well Building, Living Building, et.al.).
  • Provide ongoing leadership and support to JAX Green Team Program on each campus and the many distinct sustainability efforts across all JAX campuses. Foster a culture of sustainability by engaging senior staff, administration, faculty, and staff with the goal of being an integrated JAX-wide program.
  • Oversee the preparation of JAX’s Sustainability Tracking and Assessment Rating System (STARS), Energy Star, or other submission to industry appropriate benchmarking programs.
  • Develop measurable sustainability data and metrics, analyze, monitor and report program performance, including energy and waste data to administration via written and/or verbal communication.
  • Oversee JAX Energy Dashboard including KPI creation and content data entry, maintenance and publication.
  • Publish, administer, and update the MyJAX Sustainability intranet page as needed.
  • Advocate for and obtain utility initiatives and other funding to implement projects in support of sustainability and the JAX Sustainability Plan with reasonable paybacks where possible. Seek out and apply for relevant grants. Administer paperwork with the Efficiency Maine program, maintaining database of submitted projects.
  • Liaise with sustainability directors or equivalents at other institutions, businesses, and governments to share experience, practices, and promote collaboration.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning, or related field
  • 5 years’ experience in a leadership role in Sustainability, Environmental, Urban Planning and/or related fields
  • Strong presentation and communication skills including technical writing; excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work; proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, presentation media, and database software
  • Self-directed with strong ability to collaborate with, motivate, and influence others in various parts of the organization toward program implementation.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in the field including project management, contract administration, and budgeting skills
  • Ability to establish and execute strategic plans and initiatives with self-initiative as well as working with stakeholders and committees. Previous grant administration/writing experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of local, national, and global programs to reduce JAX’s impact on the environment and strong management of related environmental systems
  • Proficient in ability to gather data, compile information, prepare reports and presentations and draft business correspondence
  • Ability to understand and analyze utility and emissions data
