Summary

This role may be located at any one of The Jackson Laboratory’s three campuses in Sacramento, CA, Farmington, CT , or Bar Harbor ME and consideration for remote.

 

Project Scientists (PS) work independently in the execution of core responsibilities, but may require assistance from Senior Project Scientists to help resolve the most challenging problems. The PS position requires deep technical or operational knowledge of and expertise in products and services offered as well as inter-departmental functions and processes allowing the PS to effectively communicate project status updates, answer questions, troubleshoot challenges and understand scientific goals and deliverables for complex projects. The PS oversees the project and recognizes when the project may be going off track in the operation from the promised deliverable. Also responsible for establishing/monitoring performance measures and implementing actions.  Works as part of a cross-functional team to include Project Managers, Operations, Opportunity Development Managers, and Technical Information Scientists to close deals and maximize the customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Study design: Holds primary responsibility for ensuring design and execution of projects to meet study goals as defined by the prospective client or client and Project Manager for renewals and return clients.  The PS interprets the prospective customer needs, their research goals and ensures proper selection of service type, service design and alignment with operational capabilities and business objectives.  Creates formal statements of work, experimental designs and research proposals for distribution directly to customers or through ODMs to prospective clients. Takes responsibility for quality of service delivery, customer satisfaction.  In conjunction with Project Managers, Sales and Technical Information Services, presents and explains to customers various options (work flows) for performing project work.  Initiates new or renewed JAX Services projects.  Supports quotation tracking processes and report generation.
  • Study Tracking and Reporting , Record-Keeping: For accepted projects, serves as the interface between customer-facing Project Managers and Operations. Serves as the technical expert and advises PMs and Operations at the intersection of customer goals and internal capabilities. Coordinates and tracks progress on projects, updating all required databases as needed and anticipates possible problems or inconsistencies and drives mid-course changes and corrections in order to avoid customer dissatisfaction or cost overruns.  Creates formal, accurate, and tailored project summaries, according to customer-specific time tables.  Negotiates win-win solutions to problems.  Establishes and maintains an accurate, complete and understandable summary of each project.
  • Demonstrate commitment to creating a high-performance culture and positive work environment.  Includes continued effort toward improving the customer experience, coping with and supporting change, commitment to a solution driven approach to problem solving, and embracing leadership opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree (or equivelent) in biological sciences with at least 4 year's experience managing projects in a scientific/research environment. In-depth understanding of research methods, current topics in biomedical research, and mouse genetics. Two years of experience in a customer service environment.  Knowledge of sales, especially technical sales, as would normally come through direct sales work, or frequent interaction with sales personnel is preferred.
  • Demonstrated in-depth scientific or operational knowledge for one or more JAX services.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication practices in a high-profile environment requiring discretion, tact, and diplomacy.  Demonstrated scientific and technical writing skills. Ability to produce responses and solve problems in a thorough and efficient manner while contributing to a positive customer experience.  Ability to interpret the needs of teammates, customers and fellow JAX staff and support them in a helpful and professional manner. Demonstrate a commitment to creating a positive work environment, encouraging solution driven responses and an open-minded attitude when dealing with change and challenges.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving ability.
  • Proficiency with a variety of software tools including MS Office software, laboratory information management databases, Collaboration software such as Central Desktop or Sharepoint; and ERP (Axapta) and Salesforce.com CRM. Highly proficient in Excel, AXAPTA and LIMs systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to support staff to thrive on change and keep pace with a fast paced, dynamic work environment which is externally focused.
  • Ability to operate with considerable independence, often with minimal guidance.
