A postdoctoral training opportunity is available in the lab of Dr. Gareth Howell at The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) in Bar Harbor, Maine, to study the role of neuroinflammation and vascular health in glaucoma. Dr. Howell’s lab uses genetic and genomic approaches using mouse models to better understand the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases including glaucoma and dementias. A particular focus of this postdoctoral position will be on understanding the mechanisms by which glaucoma risk factors such as aging and intraocular pressure elevation affect the interactions between glial cells (such as astrocytes and microglia) with endothelial cells in the optic nerve head and retina. Dr. Howell, who was recently awarded a BrightFocus National Glaucoma Research Award to understand the role of the CDN2B-AS locus in glaucoma, is a co-PI on an NIH R01 grant with Dr. Richard Libby from the University of Rochester to study the endothelin system in glaucoma, and is the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation Chair for Glaucoma Research.
