Postdoctoral Associate
Christine Beck Lab

About The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine: Comprising 183,000 square feet of highly advanced, state-of-the-art laboratories and supporting facilities, JAX-GM is conveniently located midway between NYC and Boston in the heart of Connecticut's growing bioscience industry. Our mission at JAX-GM is to discover the complex causes of disease, develop diagnostics and therapeutics, and ultimately empower the global medical community.

As a Postdoctoral Associate in the Beck laboratory, you will join a growing team of researchers focused on how the repetitive DNA content of the human genome contributes to the regulatory landscape of our genomes. We are currently seeking a postdoctoral researcher who has experience in molecular genetics work to continue an exciting project related to mobile element biology in human genomes. Experience with molecular and biochemistry is prioritized, and a willingness to learn computational techniques for genomic analyses is key for this position. The applicant needs to have a deep understanding of the biology of the human genome, and of how to frame a hypothesis. The desire to pursue interesting questions, and to find the true answers to them is paramount.

Our team consists of two graduate students, a computational scientist and a research associate. Your job would be to pursue your research, and (if possible) independent funding opportunities in this supportive and inquisitive team, and to build upon your current knowledge in a productive postdoctoral career. The position is fully funded and awaiting the proper, enthusiastic applicant.

• PhD (or nearing completion of PhD degree)
• Ability to demonstrate effective productivity, presentations, and bench science adaptability.
• Ability to interact with a diverse team of individuals in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program
• Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct
• Proven ability to organize time effectively and work under time constraints, meet deadlines and prioritize work
• Background and advanced knowledge in genetics
• Desired techniques include mammalian cell/tissue culture, human cell culture (including ES cells) molecular cloning and verification, PCR, qPCR, and basic biochemical techniques

• Productivity exhibited in accepted and in press publications
• Experience in library preparation for next generation sequencing
• Experience with ATAC-seq, Hi-C, and ChIP-seq
• Understanding and experience with computational analysis of sequencing data
• Stem cell culturing experience
• Mentoring experience

About Us

The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with more than 2,300 employees. Headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine, it has a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in Augusta, Maine, a genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Connecticut, and facilities in Ellsworth, Maine, Sacramento, California, and Shanghai, China. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.

JAX Genomic Medicine is transforming medicine by improving patient care, lowering costs, and increasing life span and health span. JAX Genomic Medicine’s research focuses on the complex genetic causes of disease and on the development of genomic solutions tailored to each person's unique genetic makeup.

JAX Genomic Medicine sits on a 17-acre site on the campus of the University of Connecticut Health Center. The 183,500-square-foot facility opened in the fall of 2014. Now, it houses over 300 biomedical researchers, technicians, and support staff in state-of-the-art computing facilities and laboratories.

In Connecticut, JAX resides in the scenic town of Farmington, in the state’s capitol region. The Hartford region, which offers some of the best public schools in the country, is made up of both bigger cities and smaller, charming historic New England towns. JAX Genomic Medicine is also geographically located within 2 hours of Boston and New York and is close to multiple transportation systems, including bus lines, highways, railroads and international airports.

JAX employees work in a collaborative, value-driven, and team-based environment where the focus is on advancing science and improving patients’ lives. Researchers apply genetics to increase the understanding of human disease and advance treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging, and heart disease. JAX was voted among the top 15 “Best Places to Work in Academia” in the United States in a poll conducted by The Scientist magazine!
