The Jackson Laboratory is immediately seeking a Computational Scientist at the level (Assistant/Associate/Full Computational Scientist) to join our Computational Sciences group. This position offers the opportunity to make leading contributions to cutting edge research in mouse genetics, disease biology, and translational research in collaboration with the faculty and genetic resource scientists and clients of The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). Cross campus and industry collaborations are encouraged.

 

This position is available in Farmington, CT. The Computational Scientist hire is expected to make periodic multi-day work visits to the Bar Harbor campus of The Jackson Laboratory.

Responsibilities

These positions have primary responsibility for providing statistical and analytical bioinformatics expertise and interpretation in the scientific research programs at the Jackson Laboratory and its collaborative programs.

 

Characteristic distinction from Assistant Computational Scientist to full Computational Scientist include increased ability to work independently, development of in-depth knowledge in selected biological disciplines to analyze and provide expert reasoning to the relevant projects, and provide project and grant application leadership.  A full Computational Scientist is expected to independently establish collaborations within JAX, providing expert reasoning to the projects relevant to his disciplines and make leading contributions to the grant applications in collaboration with JAX researchers.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in biostatistics, computer science, bioinformatics or any relevant area of study
  • Experience in High Throughput Sequence (HTS) data analysis, microarray data analysis, experimental design, data integration, algorithm development, development of sequence analysis tools (bioinformatics programming), evaluation of analytical tools, and technology, and delivering training to the research community.
  • Must have a clear understanding and implementation of different machine learning algorithms such as logistic regression, decision trees, SVM, Naïve Bayes, KNN, neural networks, gradient descent, Random forest, ensemble gradient boost, etc.
  • Solid knowledge of scripting languages (Perl, Python, R or Ruby), and Unix OS are strictly required
  • Experience with large genomic datasets including TCGA, CCLE, 1000 Genomes Project, ExAC, gnomAD, and related resources
  • Excellent oral communication skills, including skills necessary to present at the conferences and workshops, write study designs, and analytical methods.
  • Strong track record of peer-reviewed publication in relevant scientific journals
  • Have a proven track record and enthusiasm for working in a dynamic high-performance bioinformatics research team environment
  • Will have deep bioinformatics expertise in the niche areas of biological sciences and relevant translational research, esp. cancer biology and statistical genetics
  • Be a creative contributor eager to learn new technologies and science
