  • Summary

    Safety Technicians are responsible for advising, guiding and providing direct services to staff that use and/or process hazardous materials and hazardous waste, including biological (medical) waste. Provide technical support under direction of EHSS Specialist, to develop, implement and monitor safety programs and regulated processes with goal of protecting the health and safety of JAX employees and maintaining compliance with federal, state and local regulations (OSHA, EPA, DTSC)

     

    The Technician works independently on complex projects with specific guidance from supervisors and managers.  Provides initial analysis of data, impact of errors, is proficient in problem solving and suggests corrective actions. Uses wide range of experience and specialized knowledge to works with systems users under the guidance of supervisors and managers to ensure compliance with safety regulations and program requirements.

    Responsibilities

    • Performs and documents routine inspections of work areas and life safety equipment for compliance with JAX standards. Life safety equipment includes, but is not limited to, fire extinguishers, AEDs, emergency eyewash/showers.
    • Supports the development, implementation, and audits of programs such as proper chemical inventory, labeling and storage procedures, hazard communication compliance, chemical material disposal, chemical or hazmat spill preparedness and clean-up. Performs and advises users of the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous material.
    • Assists in monitoring and evaluating facility support and production processes, systems and equipment for potential physical and health hazards; recommends and implements changes to mitigate occupational exposures. May perform area and personal monitoring for hazardous agents (primarily chemical, but also including biological and particulate); assists in planning, records data, and maintains requisite records. Performs routine and incident noise and heat stress monitoring in support of Laboratory programs.
    • Assists the EHS team in advising the Laboratory community regarding chemical and hazardous waste safety protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agenicies including, but not limited to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  
    • Safety Technicians are responsible for advising, guiding and providing direct services to staff that use and/or process hazardous materials and hazardous waste, including biological (medical) waste. Provide technical support under direction of EHSS Specialist, to develop, implement and monitor safety programs and regulated processes with goal of protecting the health and safety of JAX employees and maintaining compliance with federal, state and local regulations (OSHA, EPA, DTSC)

    • Assists the EHS team in providing air and surface contamination monitoring services for certain biological agents that represent a human health threat, animal heath threat or both.

    Qualifications

    • High School diploma or equivalent, with relevant safety training or experience
    • Knowledge of regulatory requirements
    • Written and oral communication skills sufficient to permit clear and effective exchange of information with people representing a wide diversity of disciplines and levels of sophistication.
    • Works well independently.  Must be a self-starter who exercise good judgment in decision making and possess solid analytical and problem-solving skills. 
    • Strong interpersonal, organizational and facilitation skills to work in a high profile environment requiring discretion, judgment, tact and diplomacy. 
    • Must be able to pass a fit test for a filtering facepiece/N95 as well as a full-face respirator and maintain a clean-shaven facial surface on a daily basis.
    • Ability to perform physical field work as well as office work.  Field work requires entry into a variety of different health status barrier areas ranging from wet shower-in facilities to warehouse facilities.  Appropriate PPE must be worn and Technicians must be able to climb ladders, push and maneuver around pallets of supplies ranging in weight from 25 to 400 lbs. and transport test equipment and material samples. 
    • Must be able to pass a fit test for a filtering facepiece/N95 as well as a full-face respirator and maintain a clean-shaven facial surface on a daily basis.
    • Be physically able to lift up to 10 pounds 1/3 to 2/3 of the time, 25 pounds 1/3 to 2/3 of the time, and up to 50 pounds 1/3 of the time.
