Summary

The Neurophysiology Specialist has expertise in establishing, implementing, and executing complex experiments using neurophysiology techniques, including EEG, EMG, and LTP and conducting data analysis and interpretation in support of Neurobehavioral phenotyping in the Center for Biometric Analysis. This is a key position within the Center for Biometric Analysis, requiring project management experience and extensive technical expertise across a multitude of complex phenotyping platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Establish protocols, assist PIs with experimental design, project manage studies, execute studies, and provide data analysis and interpretation:
    • Apply technical and experimental expertise to deliver high quality guidance on experimental design. Execute experimental plans with rigor to assure the quality and reliability of resulting data.
    • Provide quality control, analysis and interpretation of data. Collate and prepare data package summaries using instrument specific software, Excel, statistical software, Powerpoint and/or other required applications; ensure the quality, accuracy, integrity, completeness and security of data delivered to service users.
    • Establish and maintain SOPs, training material, competency forms, validation paradigms and proficiency metrics for every phenotyping platform under your management.
    • Develop new testing paradigms including training, competency, validation and proficiency metrics, and integrate them into CBA offerings as needed.
  • Administrative duties to ensure delivery of an effective and efficient Neurophysiology operation:
    • Project Manage the work of neurophysiology relevant phenotyping within CBA. This includes planning and organizing the flow of animals and maintaining an accurate and current schedule for equipment and operators, at all times ensuring the best possible use of all neurophysiology platforms.
    • In conjunction with the CBA Program Manager, assure IACUC compliance, updating, renewing, amending, and developing new IACUC protocols.
    • Maintain drug inventory accurately and in compliance with all local, state and national regulations.
    • Assist with the development and maintenance of an accurate cost structure for the services offered for neurophysiology phenotyping. Use the resulting item codes to generate accurate and transparent quotations for projects and grant budgets.
    • Accurately track and bill activities in a timely manner using the interface adopted by the CBA for this purpose (e.g. iLAB).
    • Contribute to the development and onboarding of LIMS systems that will facilitate neurophysiology phenotyping activities including mouse intake, data collection, QC, analysis, storage, visualization and externalization.
    • Contribute to the timely creation of accurate, high quality reports and content for grants, reports and peer-reviewed publications.
    • Assist in the recruiting and training of new personnel as needed.
    • Oversee instrument operations and assure proper maintenance and calibration.
  • Provide training, guidance, and direction to colleagues, research support staff, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scientists:
    • Develop training metrics and assure employee competence by facilitating training and monitoring results.
    • Support Courses and Conference's courses which utilize CBA platforms by providing equipment, training, and knowledge of mouse models of disease.
    • Maintain currency in research technologies and paradigms by literature search, attending seminars, delivering internal and external presentations.
    • Assist with identifying improvements in techniques, protocols and new platforms.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Physiology, or related biological science required.
    • MS/PhD preferred.
  • At least 5 years demonstrated success with executing in vivo studies in rodents.
  • At least 4 years demonstrated expertise in neurophysiology techniques in rodents (e.g. LTP, EEG, EMG) including data analysis and interpretation.
  • Rodent stereotaxic surgery skills.
  • Highly-motivated, passionate, flexible scientist with the ability to perform successfully in a dynamic, fast-paced, team environment.
  • Proven team player with track record of positive, professional working relationships.
  • Ability to develop and recommend solutions to complex problems often under time constraints.
  • Ability to handle mulitple tasks/projects at the same time and complete projects successfully and on time.
  • Must possess strong analytical, writing and successful program/project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
