    Postdoctoral Associate

    Hinson Lab

The Hinson lab is seeking an independent, highly-motivated PhD-level scientist (<2 years postdoc experience) with a strong background in cell biology to join our somatic cell genome-editing (SCGE) program funded by NIH U01 EB028898. This four-year academic project aims to: 1) interrogate human cardiac microtissues by comprehensive assessment of cardiac physiology in combination with single-cell transcriptomics to identify efficacy and adverse consequences of somatic cell genome editing targeted to heart failure-associated genetic loci, and 2) engineer autologous cardiac microtissues assembled with two distinct classes of macrophages to study cardiac function and genome editing reagents.

The Hinson lab at the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine and UConn Health studies human cardiovascular disorders especially heart failure using a combination of approaches including genome editing, pluripotent stem cell technology, genomics assays, and tissue engineering. We are a highly-collaborative multi-disciplinary team that includes expertise in genome biology, computation biology, tissue engineering and clinical cardiovascular medicine.

    • Ph.D. in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, or related field of study.
    • Prior research experience in at least two of the following areas: pluripotent stem cell biology and differentiation, cellular physiology, next-generation genome sequencing assays especially RNA-seq, and tissue engineering especially involving engineered cardiac tissues.
    • Experience in single cell technologies for transcriptomics, flow cytometry (or other forms of cytometric analyses), cellular histology and confocal microscopy especially live-cell imaging is particularly desirable.
    • Candidates should have a publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Excellent writing and communication skills, able to work independently and effectively with other members in a productive team.
    • Experience with R, Python or similar statistical package is helpful, as well as experience with clustering, pathway, genetic and genomic data analyses and bioinformatics.

**Please submit your current CV, at least 2 letters of reference, and 1-page (maximum) statement of Research Interests and Career Goals at time of application.**

We are a diverse and inclusive research group, aspiring to produce top science and scientists through attentive and progressive mentoring and interdisciplinary teamwork.

    About Us

The Jackson Laboratory (JAX, is a nonprofit biomedical research institute with over 2,000 employees whose mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for human disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health. A National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, JAX has a mammalian genetics headquarters in Bar Harbor, Maine, a facility in Sacramento, California, and a genomic medicine facility, The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (JAX-GM), in Farmington, Connecticut.

JAX-GM is transforming medicine by improving patient care, lowering costs, and increasing life span and health span. JAX-GM’s research focuses on the complex genetic causes of disease and on the development of genomic solutions tailored to each person's unique genetic makeup.

JAX-GM sits on a 17-acre site on the campus of the University of Connecticut Health Center. The 183,500-square-foot facility opened in the fall of 2014. Now, it houses over 300 biomedical researchers, technicians, and support staff in state-of-the-art computing facilities and laboratories.

JAX-GM resides in the scenic town of Farmington, in the state’s capitol region. The Hartford region, which offers some of the best public schools in the country, is made up of both bigger cities and smaller, charming historic New England towns. JAX-GM is also geographically located within 2 hours of Boston and New York and is close to multiple transportation systems, including bus lines, highways, railroads and international airports.

JAX employees work in a collaborative, value-driven, and team-based environment where the focus is on advancing science and improving patients’ lives. Researchers apply genetics to increase the understanding of human disease and advance treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging, and heart disease. JAX was voted among the top 15 “Best Places to Work in Academia” in the United States in a poll conducted by The Scientist magazine!

    Our Values:
