  • Summary

    The Product Manager will drive business and product strategy within the In Vivo Pharmacology Business Unit and is responsible for driving top and bottom line growth for existing and new products and services. Major areas of oversight may include defining and implementing business strategy related to product and service definition, performance metrics, product and service quality, customer satisfaction, sales and market analysis, revenue forecasting, inventory optimization, pricing and discounting, new products and service development, and ensuring an enhanced experience for customers. The Product Manager will have and continually seek in depth understanding of the market through sales and market data analysis and by working closely with customers and customer facing staff. The incumbent may be responsible for managing 1-2 staff members. Senior Product Manager is distinguished by the level of leadership and independence, supervision of subordinate staff, the proficiency of proactive problem solving, complexity of projects, ability to establish strategic direction, and success at improving the customer experience and growing the business through development and implementation of creative solutions. The Senior Product Manager regularly puts themselves on the front-line to advocate for positive change and overcome objections and negativity to achieve the desired result.

    Organizational Dimensions:


    This position reports directly to the Business Unit Manager overseeing the assigned Business Unit(s). This position interacts extensively with management and staff in Reproductive Sciences, Genetic Engineering Technology,Breeding Services, Customer Service, Production Planning, Opportunity Development, Business Development,Technical Information Services, Strategic Accounts, other Business Unit Managers and Product Managers, Marketing and the Project Management. Success in this position also requires routine interactions with external customers and collaborative interaction with other Jackson Laboratory managers and personnel whose teams impact the customer experience which may include, but are not limited to Comparative Medicine and Quality, Production Operations, Genetic Resources, IT, Finance, System integrations and Logistics, and Transportation.


    • Achieve top-line and bottom-line growth while ensuring an enhanced customer experience- Define business strategy and plan, drive, and implement changes and new products and programs. Have and continually seek in depth understand the marketplace through data analysis and interactions with customers and utilize this understanding to better position JAX competitively for today and the future. Participate in driving market share gain for current offerings and the development and launch of new products.
    • Strategic inventory management – Ownership of strategic planning and use of space to ensure adequate supply of common strains, maximizing space for unique strains minimize wait times and maximize revenue and quality of the customer experience. Collaborates closely with Managers and staff from Marketing, Opportunity Development, Customer Service, Production Planning and Production Operations to optimize inventory creation and usage to maximize customer satisfaction, leverage revenue opportunities, and continually improve operational efficiencies. Also includes effectively supporting customer facing staff with effective tools and training for dealing with inventory challenges and complex orders within the JAX Mice Business unit. Incumbent is also responsible for process and practice improvement management related to strategic inventory management, and product quality, driving new cross-institutional projects to streamline processes, improve the customer experience and drive revenue. They will analyze, develop proposals and implement changes to improve the customer experience while positively impacting revenue.
    • Manage Product Quality and Phenotype –. Works closely with the Senior Director of Animal Resources to ensure proactive quality measures are developed as needed for key strains or those at high risk for deviation. Works closely with Technical Support, the Genetic Quality Control team, and customers to trouble-shoot problems, ensure high quality products and minimize impact of deviations.
    • Strategic pricing and discount programs – Analyzes and defines business pricing strategy, assigns and implements pricing for new products, and recommends price changes annual or as needed to ensure pricing is competitive and results in a healthy, sustainable business. Monitors and analyzes discount programs and suggesting creative new discount approaches to drive revenue and build of strategic relationships. Assess strategic discount opportunities and work across JMS teams to successfully implement customer specific discount opportunities.
    • Staff Development - Effectively lead, manage and develop directly reporting staff and all work colleagues to support a positive, quality-focused, high performance environment.
    • Creating a positive, professional, high performance quality work culture.
    • Other responsibilities as assigned.     



    • Minimum of Bachelors degree with preference in Life Science or Engineering. Laboratory or research experience and thorough understanding of genetics desirable. MS, PhD and/or MBA/MBS degrees would be preferred.

    • Minimum three years’ experience as a Product Manager or related business environment position with documented proficiency in key competencies associated with assigned area. Experience in mouse-based research market preferred. Experience in the biomedical research marketplace preferred. Two to three years in a customer facing position preferred. Certification in a quality management program (e.g. Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing) preferred.

    • Demonstrated successful experience in formulating, implementing, evaluating, and communicating complex plans and programs and creative problem-solving as

      needed to launch and support products and services.

    • Must have excellent human relation, communication, listening and negotiation skills.

    • Knowledge of supervisory processes and techniques of leadership as would normally be acquired through three years of lead or supervisory experience.

    • Interpersonal relationship skills sufficient to allow incumbent to effectively lead others, to develop consensus among those holding disparate opinions and to

      work effectively with individuals and groups made up of people representing a diversity of levels and degrees of sophistication.

    • Ability to manage expectations of collaborators and managers and motivate team members to execute and deliver results.

    • Ability to manage timelines through analytical and problem solving capabilities.
    • Ability to organize, manage and monitor multiple projects to successful completion, adapting to shifting priorities in a high-pressure environment.

    • Advanced analytical skills and market knowledge sufficient to allow incumbent to synthesize new products and services from existing resources applied in novel


    • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time.
