    This is a unique opportunity to join a high-quality and engaged legal department firmly integrated into the research and business development advancements at The Jackson Laboratory. The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is an organization focused on discovering precise genomic solutions for disease and empowering the global biomedical community in a shared quest to improve human health, and is located in Bar Harbor, Maine between the Gulf of Maine and the mountains of Acadia National Park.

    Reporting to JAX’s Deputy General Counsel, JAX’s Counsel – Research & Transactions will provide counsel and support on a diverse and challenging range of legal issues, including life sciences agreements and regulatory matters. This role will work closely with JAX leadership in Sponsored Research Administration, Business Development and the Legal Department in advancing JAX’s strategic research initiatives and collaborations with other life sciences organizations and companies.


    The Research & Transaction Counsel will need to spend a significant amount of time at our Bar Harbor, Maine, and our Farmington, Connecticut campuses. Some work may be done remotely.


    • Trusted Legal Advisor: Provide counsel and guidance to internal clients across The Jackson Laboratory on life sciences transactions and related regulatory issues.
    • Life Sciences Transactions:
      • Partner with internal clients, including Sponsored Research Administration, Business Development, Finance, Faculty members, and other members of the Legal Department, to draft and negotiate complex agreements in the life sciences space.
      • Manage the review, negotiation and execution of Research Agreements, Collaboration Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, Data Transfer/Use Agreements, Services Agreements, and Non-Disclosure Agreements, partnering with internal clients and working with colleagues in the Legal Department.
      • Facilitate and manage communication between internal clients and external partners in contract negotiations and execution.
      • Provide sound advice and counsel to internal clients regarding compliance with regulatory requirements and JAX policies and procedures pertinent to research contracts and the conduct of research, including identifying and resolving any instances of non-compliance.
      • Develop and implement initiatives to improve the contract development and management process, including updates to contract templates, procedures for obtaining information from Faculty and other internal clients for commonly-utilized agreements, review and approval processes, contract execution, storage and retention, and related implementation and training.



      • J.D. with excellent academic credentials; strong performance from a top 50 law school or outstanding performance at strong regional law school.
      • 3+ years of experience in a law firm and/or sophisticated corporate or academic legal department.
      • Ability to drive complex and sophisticated legal matters to successful conclusion with minimal supervision.
      • Excellent analytical and negotiation skills.
      • Desire and ambition to learn and grow in a demanding, high-quality in-house legal department.
      • Experience in interpreting and applying laws, regulations, and policies from multiple levels of authority (federal, state, and institutional).
