  • Summary

    Reporting to the VP Education and operating with a high degree of discretionary authority, this position is responsible for the day to day development, implementation, and ongoing management of courses, meetings and workshops portfolio. Works closely with VP Education in developing and recommending strategic directions. Actively manages the courses and workshop portfolio to maintain quality and relevance. In association with the VP Education, develops and maintains course budgets, prepares grant proposals, and recommends strategies for corporate sponsorship. Participates in corporate and foundation fundraising. The Director will create, review, and update course offerings and academic content in collaboration with course directors; develop and teach new offerings to address emerging content areas and educational trends. Stay current in genetics and genomics though literature review and professional meeting attendance. Plays a leading role to gain and maintain public, political, and peer recognition of The Jackson Laboratory as a leader in science education and genetic/genomic literacy.


    Supervises, and provides guidance and direction to Courses and Conferences planning staff.. Serves as primary contact with course directors for content, course curricula and syllabi. The Director works closely with online education team and the Clinical & Continuing Education Program. In coordination with the VP Education, serve as host and spokesperson for courses and workshops and academic meetings . Works in collaboration with the scientific staff and a variety of management and professional staff within the Laboratory including but not limited to the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Communications and Development Office, JMCRS.


    • Manages, develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates plans for the Courses and Conferences Program educational portfolio. Incorporate current research and scientific programs, and expertise at TJL. Promote the research of JAX faculty, scientific resources, and technology within the Courses and Conferences portfolio. This includes identifying new areas of research, emerging science and technological trends, and associated opportunities that advance JAX as a leader in genetic and genomic education.
    • Writes grant proposals to support Courses and Conferences programs and actively pursues new grant opportunities.
    • Cultivates and implements corporate and foundation sponsorships.
    • Identifies and pursues external collaborations to recruit faculty, speakers, and organizers.
    • Identify strategic partnerships.
    • Supervises, monitors, and coordinates Event Manager. Manages administrative affairs of department including budget tracking, registration trends, course evaluations, and problem solving.


    • PhD in life sciences preferred
    • 5+ years work experience (may include Post-Doc assignments)
    • Familiarity with curriculum design, modern pedagogy and andragogy preferred
    • 3+ years managing staff
    • Working knowledge of genetic, genomics and biomedical research methods
    • Successful experience in writing scientific grants and publication submissions, and foundation relations
    • Ability to develop and deliver effective scientific presentations to individuals, small and large groups, representing a broad cross section of cultures, ages, disciplines and levels of sophistication
