    The Jackson Laboratory is seeking a Research Assistant I to support studies focused on genetic and environmental factors that determine cognitive resilience in aging and Alzheimer’s disease. The successful candidate will be required to execute behavioral experiments and collect tissues in support of this mission. The candidate must have strong experience in mouse handling and phenotyping. The candidate will be responsible for quality of data generated and uploading data into the database system.


    The primary duties will involve testing behavior of a colony of diverse mouse models focused on the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying effects of diet and exercise on cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as tissue collection.

    In addition to versatility within the laboratory setting, this role requires a high level of self-motivation, organization, and an ability to quickly gain new skills. The candidate must be capable of working independently as well as in a team environment.

    Other duties include:

    • Contribute to the development of research objectives; plan and refine research methods and techniques; learn, adopt, and troubleshoot new procedures as needed
    • Collect experimental data and keep detailed and accurate records
    • Interpret and evaluate results; communicate results through reports and presentations
    • Interact productively with lab members and outside collaborators to enhance the operations and outcomes of the research program


    • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related subject OR 1-3 years of equivalent work experience
    • 1 year experience in a dynamic research environment preferred.
    • Mouse handling and husbandry skills and tissue collection and dissection preferred.
    • Basic skills with laboratory instrumentation and routine measurements.
    • Ability to take initiative, work independently and exercise good judgment in decision-making
    • Ability to maintain accurate records and demonstrated ability to manage details
    • Proficient in various computer software programs to include Word, Excel, and Database management
    • Positive team player
