  • Summary

    The Genomics Educator will design, develop and teach in courses focused on genomics, genetics and computational techniques and provide support and outreach, both in person and digitally to expand and enhance education programs. Reporting to the Program Director for STEM & Undergraduate Education, the Genomics Educator will be a critical member of the Genomic Education team and will work with other program directors to create engaging content, curricula, and courses that reflect JAX’s mission to become a center of excellence in genetics and genomics education. This role will teach and interact with a range of learners including high school and undergraduate faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. The Genomics Educator will be a subject matter expert and passionate science educator, who will collaborate with JAX-trained high school and undergraduate faculty to implement genetics and genomics lessons in their classrooms.  They will also work with students through on-campus education and outreach programs. The Genomics Educator will assist in the preparation, execution and evaluation of grant funded research education programs and will contribute to peer-reviewed publications in the field of science education.


    • Interprets and converts complex genomic, genetic and computational content into innovative educational modules including learning goals, activities and assessments. Creates modules at an appropriate level for the target learner group.
    • Leads and provides direct instruction within JAX Genomic Education programs, including train-the-educator / professional development programs for high-school and undergraduate faculty.
    • Assists in the design of educational modules taught by others and in the creation of online and digital education units.
    • Provides support for JAX-trained, external teachers and professors to implement genetics and genomics modules in their classrooms.
    • Collaborates with JAX faculty and Education program directors in the development and execution of novel educational programming.
    • Develops and implements on-campus STEM educational programming for student learner groups.
    • Contributes to grant writing to support JAX Genomic Education efforts at JAX.


    • PhD in an area of biomedical research, with emphasis on genetics, genomics, computational biology, big data analysis, and related areas of biology; advanced working knowledge in these fields, including a record of peer-reviewed scientific publications.
    • Teaching, interpersonal, and/or educational outreach experience normally acquired with 2 years experience as an teaching assistant, instructor or teacher.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering effective science courses, laboratory training and/or computational biology training to individuals, small and large groups; Experience using classroom assessments and evaluation to improve their instructional strategies is a benefit. Has experience teaching a broad cross section of cultures, ages, disciplines and levels of sophistication. Can provide examples of their efforts to increase inclusion within their courses.
    • Outstanding oral and written communication skills to permit clear and effective exchange of complex scientific information to students, trainees and other advanced scientific professionals. 
    • Knowledge and experience with numerous software systems/bioinformatics platforms as well as computer languages normally encountered during analysis of genomic data.
    • Provides evidence of a personal growth mindset to enhance their professional development, content knowledge, and instructional impact.
    • Demonstrated ability to be a positive team player across diverse internal and external organizations.
    • Ability to travel to other locations including high schools, undergraduate institutions, and other JAX campuses to direct or support educational programs. Must be able to lift and set up bench-top laboratory equipment.
    • Advanced interpersonal skills sufficient for developing complex, dynamic relationship with a diverse variety of individuals representing a broad cross section of cultures, disciplines and levels of sophistications.
