  • Summary

    The Jackson Laboratory is a world leader in mammalian genetics, and has a mission we are passionate about: to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.

    The Ke Lab is seeking a Research Intern (RI) with experience in quantitative analysis to join The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. The Ke Lab focuses on RNA, a central node of genetic information flow from DNA to protein (https://www.jax.org/research-and-faculty/faculty/shengdong-ke). Malfunction of RNAs leads to many human diseases, including neurological diseases and cancer. To thoroughly address fundamental molecular mechanism of RNA, the Ke lab utilizes multidisciplinary approaches, including cutting-edge computational biology, biochemistry, innovative bio-technologies, genetics and molecular biology. The primary duties of this exciting opportunity include developing and applying cutting edge computational/statistical methods to analyze large-scale biological data including but not limited to gene expression by RNA-seq, CLIP data, CHIP data, DNA methylation, and proteomics. The successful candidate will participate in experimental design, develop and apply analysis tools, and conduct reproducible research procedures. Preference will be given to applicants with proficiency in Python, Perl, or R programming languages.

    We invite highly motivated individuals who are eager to acquire new knowledge and grow new skill sets in a team environment. The Research Intern position offers a very exciting opportunity for junior researchers to grow their research experience and skills broadly and thoroughly. We strongly support research interns for first-authorship/co-authorship in high quality publications, and firmly promote their professional career advancement. The RI position is a temporary position lasting up to 36 months and is designed specifically for individuals with a 4-year Life Science, Biology, Computational Biology or applicable degree, looking to advance their scientific/research training prior to pursuing further educational endeavors. During the internship, Research Interns are eligible to apply for permanent positions at JAX as long as performance is rated satisfactory by their Scientific Advisor, but a permanent position is not guaranteed.

    Responsibilities

    • The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: experimental design, data quality control, data analysis, and project data management.
    • The successful candidate will be expected to develop and deliver presentations at lab meetings, and prepare publications and reports.
    • The Research Intern will meet weekly with the PI or Research Scientist mentoring his/her internship.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, bioinformatics, computational sciences or related discipline;
    • Explicit interest in pursuing and completing eligibility requirements for continuing studies in biomedical and/or clinical research; or in pursuing a medical profession;
    • Previous experience in an academic setting performing statistical analysis, interpreting and evaluating results, and compiling data, is required;
    • The ability to work in a demanding, fast paced, team-oriented environment, while maintaining a high-level of professionalism;
    • Exceptional technical skills, facility with technical software and databases and ability to develop technical documents and presentations.
