  • Summary

The Ke Lab has an Associate Research Scientist opening in Computational Biology at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. The Ke Lab focuses on RNA, a central node of genetic information flow from DNA to protein (https://www.jax.org/research-and-faculty/faculty/shengdong-ke). Malfunction of RNAs leads to many human diseases, including neurological diseases and cancer. To thoroughly address fundamental molecular mechanism of RNA genomics, the Ke lab utilizes multidisciplinary approaches, including computational biology, biochemistry, innovative biotechnologies, genetics and molecular biology. We are especially interested in m6A RNA genomics:

    1) Fundamental mechanism of m6A RNA genomics

    2) Regulation of m6A RNA genomics in neurological disease and cancer, using mouse and human iPS models.

(References: 1] Ke, S. et al. m6A mRNA modifications are deposited in nascent pre-mRNA and are not required for splicing but do specify cytoplasmic turnover, Genes & Development 2017, 31: 990-1006; 2] Ke, S. et al. A majority of m6A residues are in the last exons, allowing the potential for 3' UTR regulation, Genes & Development 2015, 29:2037-53.)

    Responsibilities

The successful candidate will develop and apply computational methods for genomic data analyses, have novel opportunities at the intersection of algorithms, data interpretation, and experimental design in close collaboration with the experimental team in the lab. The applicant is expected to have Ph.D. in computational biology, cancer genomics, or a similar discipline, and demonstrate strong computing expertise, publication, and communication skills. We also consider exceptional applicants who are new to computational biology, including statistics, applied math, physics, and computer science.

    Qualifications

    • PhD. in a quantitative area: computational biology, computer science, statistics, physics and applied math
    • Programming in R, Python, Perl or C++
    • Experience in genomic dataset analysis and integration
    • Three (3) years of postdoctoral training or equivalent research experience, and demonstrated meritorious scientific performance.
    • Strong publication record (two or more peer-reviewed publications).
    • Ability to integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner, prioritize and drive to results with a high emphasis on quality, and work as part of a team.
    • Proven ability to analyze and synthesize information, and demonstrated resourcefulness in finding appropriate solutions to problems and initiative in presenting alternatives and implementing solutions to ensure effective change and/or eliminate or mitigate potential negative effects.
    • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, including the ability to plan, schedule, and successfully carry out multiple projects at the same time to successful conclusion with minimal supervision.
    • Quality orientated including delivering accuracy and attention to detail.

To apply, please submit (1) a cover letter describing past research accomplishments, research interests, and career goals, (2) a current CV, and (3) the contact information of three references.

    About Us

The Jackson Laboratory (JAX, www.jax.org) is a nonprofit biomedical research institute with over 2,000 employees whose mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for human disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health. A National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, JAX has a mammalian genetics headquarters in Bar Harbor, Maine, a facility in Sacramento, California, and a genomic medicine facility, The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (JAX-GM), in Farmington, Connecticut.

The Jackson Laboratory's 43-acre scenic Bar Harbor campus is nestled between the Gulf of Maine and the mountains of Acadia National Park. Some of the best hiking and biking in the world (over 50 square miles of mountains, lakes, views, and dramatic coastline) is accessible from our campus. We are one mile from downtown Bar Harbor, which offers a vibrant downtown district with a plethora of restaurants, shops, museums, and galleries.

JAX employees work in a collaborative, value-driven, and team-based environment where the focus is on advancing science and improving patients’ lives. Researchers apply genetics to increase the understanding of human disease and advance treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging, and heart disease. JAX was voted among the top 15 “Best Places to Work in Academia” in the United States in a poll conducted by The Scientist magazine!
