  • Summary

    The Murray Lab (https://www.jax.org/research-and-faculty/faculty/research-scientists/steve-murray) at The Jackson Laboratory is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to support our ongoing resource development programs, and to develop new research and resource projects. Our group uses large scale mouse genetic engineering approaches to dissect gene function, to develop mouse models of human disease, and to generate and characterize useful genetic tools for the scientific community. Programs include the KOMP2 project (Dickinson et al., 2016, Nature), with the long-term goal of generating a mouse knockout for each gene in the genome, our Cre Driver Resources project that aims to generate novel tools for gene manipulation (Heffner et al., 2012, Nature Communications), and our most recent effort to directly model human developmental disorders using CRISPR/Cas9 (Gumier et al., 2015, Nat. Genetics; Brophy et al., 2017, Genetics).

    Responsibilities

    We are specifically looking for a highly motivated individual to:

    • lead core components of our existing resource programs;
    • develop additional independent projects that include, but are not limited to:
      • the development of automated imaging and morphometric techniques for phenotypic characterization of craniofacial development;
      • the optimization and application of methods to use CRISPR/Cas9 to directly validate the pathogenic role of rare disease variants in structural birth defects;
      • adaptation of new genetic engineering technologies to develop new mouse model resources for the scientific community.

    Qualifications

    • Ph.D. or equivalent in Developmental Biology, Genetics, or a related field and postdoctoral experience.
    • Proven track record of publication and presentation at scientific meetings is essential.
    • Experience in developmental biology and in particular craniofacial development, 3D imaging and analysis, morphometrics, and/or genome editing are highly desirable.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work within an interdisciplinary team are essential.

    About Us

    The Jackson Laboratory (JAX, www.jax.org) is a nonprofit biomedical research institute with over 2,000 employees whose mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for human disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health. A National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, JAX has a mammalian genetics headquarters in Bar Harbor, Maine, a facility in Sacramento, California, and a genomic medicine facility, The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (JAX-GM), in Farmington, Connecticut.

    The Jackson Laboratory's 43-acre scenic Bar Harbor campus is nestled between the Gulf of Maine and the mountains of Acadia National Park. Some of the best hiking and biking in the world (over 50 square miles of mountains, lakes, views, and dramatic coastline) is accessible from our campus. We are one mile from downtown Bar Harbor, which offers a vibrant downtown district with a plethora of restaurants, shops, museums, and galleries.

    JAX employees work in a collaborative, value-driven, and team-based environment where the focus is on advancing science and improving patients’ lives. Researchers apply genetics to increase the understanding of human disease and advance treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging, and heart disease. JAX was voted among the top 15 “Best Places to Work in Academia” in the United States in a poll conducted by The Scientist magazine!
